11 Dec 09 Canon EOS 1000D

Canon's new EOS 1000D lies at the bottom of the pyramid of cameras from Canon and competes directly with the Nikon D60. The 1000D. The camera has a rounded look which extends all the way to its buttons. You could mistaken it for a point-and-shoot if you see the camera from the rear, around its screen. The camera's finish feels very sandy to the touch; the 1000D is a very light camera and we feel that attaching a big lens will probably upset its balance significantly. Very light dSLRs are probably not a good idea.

Using the camera and its buttons makes it clear that it's made for the beginner and a first-time dSLR user. So if this is your first digital camera purchase, the 1000D should be considered. The camera is not as user-friendly as the D60 though.

One of the key features of the EOS 100D is the Live View. It's similar to the one found in the Nikon D90 and lets you use the LCD screen to focus on your subject. This feature introudces a slight delay while using the camera though and we feel that perhaps the good-old viewfinder is the best way to handle the focus aspect. The body is built well and the flash hinge and structure is slightly better on this than the 400D.

For storage of photos, the 1000D uses an SD/SDHC card.

The menus on the 1000D are basic and not as useful as those found on the Canon 50D. The controls are a little more manual with the 1000D. Most of the controls can be changed using the button and jogdial combination instead of using the direction keys in the software menu.

Focussing is simple and straight forward. Macro shots are fairly easy to take as well. The camera feels and works a lot like the EOS 400D and it also happens to replace and take its place in the price range. The EOS 1000D is a slightly better camera than the aged 400D in image quality, but we preferred the body and ergonomics on the older sibling . The Canon EOS 1000D retails for Rs. 34,995.
